How to fight Childhood obesity? One Success at time!

Wednesday, September 14th, 2011

You don’t have to look hard to find a story about childhood obesity and its increased prevalence among our youth.  Twelve year old T.j. King and his parents recognized that he was heading down an unhealthy path at an early age and decided to make changes.  His parents sought the help of Windsor Squash & Fitness Club’s newest trainer, Colby Martin, to help motivate and guide their son towards living a more healthy lifestyle.  What follows is Colby’s description of what it was like to work with TJ.

Even though Tj liked to play sports, he was still gaining weight at an unhealthy pace. Playing sports is often seen as enough to keep kids active and healthy. But Tj is a good example that sometimes that may not be enough. As with most kids, the biggest problem for Tj was that he was consuming far more calories in a day than he was burning.  We needed to find a fun and exciting way to help him burn additional calories, while carefully monitoring his diet and educating him on healthy food and lifestyle choices.

“It was a lot of hard work, but the workouts got easier and easier as I kept going” Tj said about his training. “Colby kept it fun and just like he said, if I kept working hard I would be in the shape I wanted to be in, in no time.” After 6 months Tj had returned to a regular 11 year old weight and had strength and speed he had never felt before. “sports are a lot more fun now” says Tj who is still at a healthy weight. “now we have to make sure they aren’t doing too much exercise” says Tj’s father Tim King. “he’s taken what Colby has taught him and hasn’t stopped pushing himself yet”. Tj is still working with Colby at Windsor Squash and Fitness Club and is striving to achieve his new fitness goals.
