Important information about our Junior Gold Event
Weekend of November 14th, 15th & 16th

As many of you are aware, Windsor Squash & Fitness Club has been awarded a Junior Gold event from Squash Ontario this season. This is a great honour, and is 1 of only 2 such events that will be held outside of the GTA this season. The Gold events are the premiere Junior events in the province and will attract top level players who are competing for provincial and national rankings.

Our event is scheduled for the weekend of November 14th, 15th and 16th. In our inaugural run, we are expecting approximately 70 players from across the province that will be competing in age categories ranging from under 11 year to under 19. Many of our own players will be competing and this will be a great opportunity for our members to see some of our Juniors compete against the best players in the province.

We see this event as an opportunity to promote our Junior program, our Club and our City. As a result of some generous support from our members, the competitors on this weekend will be treated to many amenities beyond what is normal for these events. All meals throughout the weekend will be provided for tournament players, a number of free spots have been provided for the Detroit Racquet UP program and in some cases accommodations donated in order to defray the cost of travel for some out of town players. The support has been overwhelming and we are extremely grateful.

Of course with a field this large, as well as parents and other spectators, there will be some disruptions to our normal business on this weekend.  We have booked off all courts (including the doubles court) from 3:00PM to Close on Friday, 9:15AM to Close on Saturday and 9:15AM to 4:00 PM on Sunday. As entries are finalized this week, we will gradually be releasing available courts for members to book. We appreciate your patience in this and suggest that you check back throughout the week to see what becomes available.

Please feel free to stop by over the weekend. We guarantee that you will be impressed by the level of play, the determination and the sportsmanship from the competitors.

Fall Down Wrap-Up

Wednesday, October 29th, 2014

Another successful tournament wrapped up around 4pm on Sunday.  I have received numerous emails from out of town players who were so complimentary about our club, members and staff.

I want to pay special homage to our sponsors.  We managed to get 4 cash sponsors this time around and a a result the beer lasted until 3.30pm on Sunday!  The cash sponsors were Peter Wares, Wayne Carroll and a further 2 members who wish to remain anonymous.  On behalf of everyone I would like to thank them for their generosity and helping make all competitors have such an amazing time.

Special thanks to Anis Khan who paid for the pizza on Friday evening and also bought the junior prizes as well as a $20 gift certificate for all junior entrants.  Anis is a great supporter of our tournaments and juniors.

Mark Dalla Valle donated the breakfast items once again and I know how much the players appreciate the fantastic spread we put on every morning, especially the hung over ones!

Dave Porter and Pernod Ricard supported by donating a number of great prizes for the winners prize table.

Finally Steve Demarco who was once again responsible for the souvenir warm up top.  The feedback on these was great!

We always rely on members support for these events and this time around people really stepped up to help.

On court the entertainment and quality of squash was fantastic in all divisions.  The woman’s draw was especially competitive.  I will be posting a list of winners on the blog this week.

Squash Tip from the Pro

Tuesday, September 30th, 2014

Tip of the week is back and I am hoping to get some videos recorded this week to post as part of this.

This week however I wanted to discuss something that I noticed in Mexico with the National Team.  Someone there asked me what the difference was between the top 20 players and the top 50.  This was an interesting question and made me analyze what was going on when they met.

In the warm up it was not always obvious who was the better player, however when the match started the difference was clearer.  The better players were much more pro active in the rallies.  As soon as their oppGraeme - on courtonent missed a target by even a small amount the higher ranked players punished them.  Not with out right winners but by initiating attacks and putting work into their opponents legs.  This meant the lower ranked players were never able to get into a rhythm and play their natural games.  Obviously their technical strength means they are able to execute their attacking shots consistently and better/more explosive movement gets them into position earlier to create openings but the big difference appeared to be a mind set and confidence in attacking especially from lose balls in the back.  Rather than just hit the ball back they were able to attack all four corners with a range of shots/paces and weights.

Next time you are on court try and recognize a bad length and look to do something aggressive with it.  By doing this not only do you make your opponent work harder but you also put pressure on their length game as they know any loose shots will result in some hard movements!!

To read more tips from Graeme, be sure to check out the Squash Blog.  He can also be reached at if you have any questions about Squash programming at the Club.

Way to go Amin!

Amin with Squash Ontario President Mark Sachvie

Many of you would recognize Amin Khan as the young two-handed backhander that spends every spare minute by the Squash Courts looking for a game.  We’re very proud to share that this past weekend he won a Junior Gold event in the U11 division at the White Oaks resort and Spa in St. Catherines.

This win marks Amin’s first Gold victory and possibly the first Gold tournament win by a Windsor Squash & Fitness Club Junior in over 10 years!  In the finals, Amin showed his resilience and competitive nature as he sent 3 of the 4 games into extra points.  The first game proved to be a marathon as Amin squeaked out a win against his opponent 26-24.  In the 4th, he persevered after a 5 point deficit to win 16-14, claiming the match and the tournament title.

Junior Gold events are reserved for the top players in the province and this was the first of five that will be held this season.  We would like to wish Amin and all of our Juniors the best of luck as they compete this season!
